Third World Group
In 2002 the Third World Group started up in our parish, prompted by Fr. Colman McGrath, and also in response to the poverty and suffering by many people in the Third World at the time. For instance, we have helped people in the following countries:
Uganda, Kenya, Ecuador, Bosnia, Mozambique, Liberia, Kashmir, The Holy Land, Philippines, Malawi
At present, we are a group of ten volunteers some of whom are in full time work and others who are retired.

Most of our funds are raised within our own parish by organising Coffee Mornings, Ceilidhs, Choir Concerts, Sponsored Walks and Marathons, Car Boot Sales and Donations.
We are very grateful to all our own parishoners who have provided us with most of this money and we thank them most sincerely for their tremendous effort over the past six years.
Since then, we have raised the sum of £32,000. |
Update
FORTHCOMING EVENTS
Our next committee meeting will be held on Monday 30 January 2012 in the chapel house. Anyone wishing to join the group will be very welcome.
COFFEE MORNING
The last coffee morning was held on Sunday 4 December when we raised £200.
CHRISTMAS CRACKER
A very successful Christmas Cracker Ladies' Night was held on Friday 18 Nov 2011. The amount raised was £782.
OPEN GARDEN
Another successful event was held on Saturday 4 June in the garden of one of our members. This 'Open Garden' aftenoon was enjoyed by all visitors as they were able to wander around the beautiful garden, buy plants and raffle tickets and then settle down in the peace of the garden to enjoy tea/coffee and home baking. This event was organised for Strathcarron Hospice and our group funds. The total raised was almost £500.
PAMPER NIGHT
On Friday, 13 May the group organised a Ladies' Pamper Night which was a great success as it was well attended by ladies of the parish. All enjoyed having nails or eyebrows done or having a facial. Stalls selling craft items were enjoyed and many raffle tickets were bought. Another such event is planned for Autumn. The Total raised for £742.70
PAKISTAN FLOOD APPEAL
Following the tragedy in Pakistan, the Group decided to send £1,000 to the Disasters Emergency Committee.
LIGHT IN AFRICA
Our organisation heard of this charity which was started by Mama Lynn to finance 3 orphanages for street children in Tanzania. We donated £2,500 to help with the orphanages and also with an old folks' home.
BACKPACK PROJECT (Organised through Mary's Meals (SIR))
The parish excelled themselves by donating the grand total of 100 backpacks - each one containing clothes, shoes, toiletries and stationery items. The team in the TWG had great fun sorting and packing the backpacks into different ages for boys and girls. These backpacks will by now have arrived in Uganda. Along with these 100 bags were 5 teacher packs and 1 nursery pack.
MALAWI
In the coming year one of our parishioners, Kieran Taylor will be working as part of a group of students from Glasgow University in Malawi during the summer months. They will continue the work started last year helping to establish clinics for those suffering from Aids, assisting families affected by Aids and also setting up and working in orphanages for children whose parents have died as a result of Aids.
The Third World Group has donated £2,500 for the students' work.
